Set in the rolling green hills of the eponymous vineyard and just 20 minutes from the Canberra CBD, Shepherds Run Restaurant is a friendly and cosy family-run affair. The food leans toward the traditional and comforting side, with lamb racks, pies, chicken paprika and Moroccan spiced vegetables. The atmosphere is cosy, particularly in winter, when the fireplace and tapestry-covered walls make you glad you came in from the Canberra cold for a hearty meal, a warming coffee or just a little taste of the Shepherds Run wine.

Shepherds Run Felonious Fox Cabernet Merlot 2005

Loved the media pack that came with the two wines sent in: refreshingly honest and lacking the usual hyperbole (and polish). Unusually for a Cabernet, aged in old American oak.

Has a whiff of catnip oak - vanilla and cocoa over black fruit with just a hint of herb. Medium to full bodied with lovely texture - creamy and smooth - with balanced acidity and good length. It’s a seductive sort of wine, if not a little obvious (due to the choice of oak), but the quality of the fruit is impressive. Excellent.
