Mario Larocca will teach you the fine art of making fresh pasta, tiramisu, pizza, scallopini and many other dishes.

The course starts on Thursday 5 April from 6:30pm.

Here's the calendar for the days we're open over the Christmas/New Year period. We've also decided to take our annual week off in early January to recuperate for the exciting year ahead.

New book shows Canberra wine district gets better with age

A comprehensive guide to the Canberra wine district — its history, unique features, exceptional performance and the wineries themselves— will be ‘uncorked’ tomorrow, Friday 20 May 2011.

Wines of the Canberra District: Coming of Age will be launched at the University House Wine Symposium by the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, Andrew Barr.

Written by local winemakers Brian Johnston and Janet Johnson, the book is a must-have for those keen to discover the Canberra wine district, as well as for people who want to know the secrets behind the region’s success.

Developed with the support of the Canberra District Wine Industry Association (CDWIA), the book is also an extensive reference source, profiling more than 40 wineries.

“It’s the essential guide for those wanting to find out where the wines are made and the people who make them,” said Elke Davies, spokesperson for the CDWIA.

“Each profile includes a background to the winery, their approach to production, awards received, as well as practical details such as cellar door sales.

“This book will provide another positive tool to attract and educate Canberrans about the amazing local wine region that many residents have sitting just over their own back fence.

"We know that it will also play a part in motivating more tourists to include a trip out to the wineries on their next visit to Canberra," she continued.

From the unique continental climate to its strong science-based approach, the book explores the key reasons why Canberra District wines are now well and truly on the national wine map.

Wines of the Canberra District: Coming of Age will be available for purchase at the University House Wine Symposium this Friday, as well as at a range of quality local bookstores, cellar doors and Canberra attractions. The 7th University House Wine Symposium

Over the course of its 54 year history, University House at The Australian National University has held a series of high-profile wine symposia. The 7th Wine Symposium, to be held this year, coincides with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the first of the now more than 30 commercial wineries and more than 150 vineyards that comprise the Canberra District Wine Region. In recognition of this, the 7th University House Wine Symposium will focus on the wines and wineries of the local district.

Poetry competition

Members of University House and the ANU Emeritus Faculty are invited to compose this year's "Symposium Poem".
Poems entered will be selected by a panel and the chosen poem printed in the symposium program.
The winning poet will be invited to read the poem at the gala dinner on Saturday.

Shepherds Run is, of course, involved in this wonderful event. We will be there at the wine tasting on Friday 20 May and we're the first stop on Tour 4 on Saturday 21 May. Jason Nelson, the local cooper, will be giving a demonstration on all things oak - barrel shaving and firing, the differences between American and French oak and when you would use them, different levels of toasting and much more.

Come for a candle light dinner to celebrate Earth Hour.

We will have our normal Restaurant menu on for the evening but we'll be doing it all by candle light - a real challenge for the kitchen staff!!

Might even be a good night for star gazing! So keep your fingers crossed for a cloudless night.

If it's a cool night we'll light the fire for you so the atmosphere will be very romantic.
