Shepherds Run at Wamboin

The vineyard

Our on-site vineyard is a tiddler with about 5000 cherished vines. Perched on the western side of a small valley, at over 800 metres on the Great Dividing Range and facing north-east, the vineyard is ideal for early sun each day, but is sheltered from warm westerly winds that roar in from Australia’s inland in summer. Our vines have a long and happy growing season without suffering from the high temperatures of areas further inland. The relative coolness gives our wines great length and complexity. On many evenings a cool breeze from the east coast also refreshes the vines.

The vineyard grows to perfection cool climate grape varieties of Merlot, Pinot Noir and Riesling. The price of all this serenity is some dark and stormy nights when wind, hail and occasional snow reek havoc in the vineyard.

The winery under the café and cellar door is our temperature controlled barrel store. Here we blend and mature our wines. The crushing and pressing is done at Jeir Creek winery by Greg Gallagher and Rob Howell – thanks guys.
