Winery Trail
Terroir Trail - A Canberra District Cool Climate Winery Experience
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Master of Wine and Robert Parker’s (The Wine Advocate) Asia/Pacific
representative based in Singapore recently commented:
“If you've never tried wines from the Canberra District ... in the southern part of NSW around the city of Canberra, you are truly missing out on some of the most exciting new wines coming out of Australia today.”
Thanks for taking the time to find out about our new winery trail!
We have designed a trail for you that is an integrated
winery tourism experience from vineyard to bottle with
experiences including:
- wine tasting,
- winery dining,
- vineyard and winery tours, &
- winery activities (eg petanque)
Each participating winery will contribute one or more aspects to your winery tourism experience.
The trail showcases four distinct sub-regions in the Canberra District wine region: the ACT; Wamboin/Bungendore; Lake George & Gundaroo (these are the cooler sub-regions of the Canberra District cool climate wine region).
Perfect for groups of friends and conference partner days, this tour is designed to offer you a relaxed, educational and fun tour. So sit back and enjoy the views, taste some sensational wines and have a great time!
The wineries you will visit on this winery trail are:

Mount Majura Vineyard produces highly acclaimed wines from our unique site. Our job is to give voice to the ancient limestone and volcanic soils of our vineyard through choosing the best varieties for the site and sympathetic vineyard and winemaking practices. The Spanish variety, Tempranillo, has found a home here, along with other regional specialities, such as Shiraz and Riesling are. Australia's most respected wine critic, James Halliday has awarded the vineyard a 5 star rating, one of eleven wineries in the district to receive such an accolade.
While the first plantings in the vineyard commenced in 1998, it wasn't until 2006 that we opened our current cellar door. Since 2006 the cellar door has received several regional tourism awards in the category of best, winery cellar door, distillery or boutique brewery.
With winery, vineyard and cellar door all in the one place, we offer the complete wine experience only fifteen minutes from the heart of Canberra.
As part of the Winery Trail, Mount Majura Vineyard will offer a"Gumboot" tour of their vineyard (guided or self guided), showing the geology of our unique site along with general grape and wine production discussion. Following the tour of the vineyard, guests will return to our cellar door for a seated wine tasting of our current vintage wines.

Perched high on the hill with a gorgeous view over the valley and vineyard, Shepherds Run Wines and Restaurant will be the lunch stop on the Winery Trail.
First you’ll spend time with either Peter or Elke, learning about the history of the vineyard and the area, the different varieties and why they were chosen and so much more, while tasting their sensational wines including “Silly Point” Riesling, “The Girls” Merlot and “Mardi Gras” Gewürztraminer.
Then sit down by the crackling fire for a lunch of fresh homemade stone fired pizzas or chunky steak pie of the day and dessert.
If there’s enough time left you may like to have a go at the French game of petanque – one of the only games you can play with a glass of wine in your hand!
Once you’ve purchased any wine you’d like to take with you, or maybe even some handmade local jewellery, it’s back on the bus to the next winery where you’ll try some more sensational wines from the Canberra Wine District.

Lerida Estate prides itself on excellence in design of both its wine and winery. The wines are carefully crafted to reflect the Lake George ‘terroir’, and are now recognised as being among the most stylish not only in the Canberra District, but in Australia. The Lerida Estate winery is designed by the distinguished Australian architect, Glenn Murcutt, and ‘sits lightly’ on the ethereal Lake George landscape. Lerida Estate wines are made in small quantities and not always easy to find, but they are increasingly sought after by those who are prepared to make the effort to seek out unique and rewarding taste experiences.
For its part of the Winery Trail, Lerida Estate will take the visitors on a tour of the Glenn Murcutt designed winery to explain how wines are made using the various pieces of equipment in the winery, after which the visitors will be offered a tutored tasting of a selection of Lerida Estate's stylish wines, with commentary provided by either the winemaker Malcolm Burdett or the owner Jim Lumbers. Visitors will be able to warm themselves by the fire during the coolers months, or sit in the winery courtyard in the warmer months - on both occasions enjoying a magnificent view of the vineyard and Lake George
